Big Smile $STP - Suntech Power Holdings

STP - Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (ADR): NYSE:STP quotes & news - Google Finance

Thanks pad191 in the stocks chat for bringing this one to my attention. I'm always looking to go long in this sector (new energy) and there is a nice sale on with all the Chinese new energy companies. The balance sheet looks strong, cash on hand, nice assets vs liabilities, and they are already a strong player in the solar sector.

Notes
  • To me this looks like a no brainer run-up to earnings, before the U.S. market opens at 8a.m. U.S. Eastern Time on Thursday, June 3, 2010. If they miss you have a nice long play in the solar sector
  • Guidance released today sounds promising and net rev. is inline with last Q at $580m.
  • I saw this posted by a Chinese stocks analyst today as well: "Thomas Weisel Partners maintained Market Weight rating and $16 price target on Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (NYSE:STP)." - link

[15:33] * Miles buys first add on NYSE:STP --> FILLED 160 @ 11.56000. Target $14.50.

Always do your own DD. I only had time for about 30 mins worth, so be warned

Looks good so far, closed $11.70. Also forgot to mention LDK reports after the bell today. They reported a great Q: LDK Solar Q1 sales $347.6 mln vs. $283.3 mln

JASO reports: May 11, 2010 Q1 2010 Earnings Release - 9:30AM EDT

Solar stocks like to rally together somewhat I've noticed ala Casino and other sectors.

Just out of China...

JASO reports a killer quarter: JA Solar Announces First Quarter 2010 Results -- SHANGHAI, May 11

Highlights:
-- Q1 shipments of 272MW, above the company's revised guidance of 265MW, representing an increase of 17.7% sequentially
-- Q1 gross margin of 22.9%, up from 20.5% in Q4 and above the company's guidance of 20%
-- Q1 operating income of $51.7 million and operating margin of 18.5%
-- Net income of $38.4 million and GAAP EPS of $0.24 per fully diluted ADS
-- Strong balance sheet with a cash balance of $282 million and no short term loan
-- Conversion efficiency reached 19.1% for JA Solar's new selective emitter cell technology
-- Began volume shipment at the company's wafer and module facility

Hopefully a saggy overall market today doesn't prevent these solars from running.

Ugh wish I'd done more DD on this company. The following article paints a bleak picture for Suntech. It's a bit complex but it's also pretty typical for some of these Chinese corps. Hope nobody here dug in to deep...

Ouch! That sounds sketchy as hell.

Either way, I used to trade STP 2 years ago or so and what I saw from them then, I liked. I haven't exactly kept up with them, so I can't comment too much.

I will comment on the fact that STP is a solar company in China. And since the Euro looks bleak, I feel as though many solar companies in Europe will be the major winners as they can manufacture their products cheaper than China-- particularly in the green tech sector. Once the Euro starts to gain footing again, I would look into STP. By that time I'm sure when they report their quarterly, this information in the article will come out. If all of this info is correct, STP could become a $3-5 stock!
