Tipping a Stock - Posting in the share tip forum

This forum is not for quick day trade posts / quick 48 hour trades. Please post in the day trading forum. The day trading forum is quick where posts expire quickly. As such the level of information needed is far less than here, an investor pick. Tipping here needs to be over 48 hours to give investors time to invest. Urgent tips please post in day trade section. Shorting shares over 48 hours can be posted here also.

When tipping a stock there is a certain minimum level of information you need to share before posting. This will help keep the site clear and professional.

Title – The title should list the Pseudonym first, then the full name of the stock, then in brackets where its listed and the stock class.

I.e., XL, XL Capital (NYSE / Insurance)
Or
LVS, Las Vegas sands Casino (DOWJ / Gambling)
Or
AFR, Afren Oil, (AIM / Oil)

etc for quick reference to other traders / investors.

Inside the main post you need to display the reason for the tip. Simply a basic argument to other investors. As a minimum the post needs to include:

The price it is now / that you brought at / shorted at.

The price not to buy above / below (for people who read the tip late and give a range for the buy recommendation)

The anchor date of selling / taking short position. i.e. may be Q1 financials, FDA approval date, merger date, dividend date, or simply a random date in future (mainly for longs just enter asy 6 months)

The expected profit / estimated sell / positioning price. This is taken as ball park. What do you expect to gain. We wont hold a gun to your head if its off, especially on longer tips.

Any positive negatives, suggested stop loss. What are the potential downsides as well as up. very important to senior traders who may set an example, and stop losses, only to have others follow in and lose out.

Then you need to give a brief of the stock, your opinion, not others, and why you recommend it. Posting links to latest news, websites, analyst reports will help lead to more reps. Other investors can then comment if they agree, ask further questions, argue their belief. It may be some people stop you investing in a duck, you may help otherd see the light, you may share a major stock tip. Good ones will lead to major rep points.

As a guide a "BUY" recommendation should be from 48 hours plus to 6 weeks. A "Long" is anything past 6 weeks. Less than 48 hour, urgent buys, again should all be posted in day trading sections.

Note
WATCH – a Watch label can give less detail in the stock than an actual pick. Here you can comment that you are watching the stock for a certain event, or a correction in the price. When the stock becomes a ‘buy’ edit the original watch post to amended ‘watch’ to the correct setting, and type more detail to tip the stock. If you lack information about a stock or are worried on giving it a full tip, post it as a watch. Someone with more experience may help by confirming it is or isnt a buy at this stage. In future it can be removed or changed to a buy for others to see.

As mentioned for quick tips, quick posts on multiple stocks, please post this in the day trading / 48 hour forums. In the day trading forum the level of information can be far less due to the impulse reactions of a day trader. Its highly recommended that day traders on stock rants set up a live chat, MSN, or telephone links due to the speed of the trades.

Any discussions or general questions need to be posted in the correct forum. Not on stock picks.

Any 48 hour+ share tips that lack information, we will ask for further information, or delete it. Deletion will lead to a loss of reputation.

This is for the ease and benefit of other traders and investors and to keep the boards clean to the point.

Lets make some money. Trade Lucky.

Regards
Vic

This thread should be a sticky.

Also, could someone add a "Swing" tag in. Just a thought.

Edit: Just a thought but, maybe a link to a companies website as well should be in there.

yeah - Miles / Sean get on the case and call me. Some tips are good - some need more work - alot in the wrong place.
Tips need to be clear cut and we need minimum criteria. HELL if I had RSS feed and had all the crap we have up on there I be annoyed. Some post good ones then bad due to time. Multiple threads about same stock

WE ARE NOT GOOGLE!!! WE ARE BETTER

See email, see above, call me.
All please read and put a decent level of work into tip section. Else use other forum boards if your unsure as we can always 'promote' the thread to the tip board.

Prefer less tips here but good ones that the s*** storm we have here

We HAVE TO SET AN EXAMPLE guys. We are in it together. We are the core but opening doors up so need this sorted

Sean / Miles also call so I know what you want me to do on the hall of fame as need to update
Also if we CAN automate the officail tips and have a summary board - as emailed and you mentioend work in progess - would be unique and really drive our stock tip forum to the greatness it deserves

Cheers
Vic

I was out of office on business Friday/Saturday..meetings, seminars, expos, dinners.....not having access to a computer was like having a poison ivy rash on me onions while speaking in public. Those are the days when one has to have some confidence in their basic ability to recognize and buy value. (and stay away from the two-day swing plays)

I like the "VALUE" minimum for stock pick posts...it really sets us apart from the street-level discussion garbage-pail. We need to establish a policy for moderators...how to handle insufficient posts. OR just let the built-in ratings system take care of it??

(SENT VIA EMAIL - POSTED FYI)

Ok
Things will be automated in future but at the moment we need to put extra effort in all our ‘share tips’

This is what I just mentioned to Miles & Sean.

1) We have the stock tip section as normal. This is for share tips OVER 48 hours in length. One thread per share. The original poster has to put out a minimum list of criteria saying the buy range, sell date, and sell pricing / anticipated profit. We a brief on the stock, any links to data, analyst reports. Others can then comment below / ask questions. If 6 months plus label it long and just give a rough estimate in the sort of profit – the longer it is obviously greater deviation.
2) BUY = a stock to buy now for trade 2 days + to 6 weeks sort of range. Long anything after
3) NOW I AGREE. People want to post quick comments on multiple shares, like “BUY TELECOMS, I AM BUYING FFD, GGF, GGE” or “Just brought 5000 in XL and think this will pop”…….. basically DAY TRADING or 48 hour trading. We DO need a separate thread for 48 hours or less comments. We can then give a warning to people that posts go out of date quick, maybe in minutes. We can also suggest day trading friends on stock rants set up MSN, live chat, telephone links, email swap etc which we can develop on site. Here the tips are quick.
4) REPUTATION on share tips will be HEAVY if the buy price turns a profit at the estimated date (the 48 hour+ ones). For day traders you will get reps from other day traders who agree with you. Hence share tips of 4 weeks may be slow, but members may get a lot more reps than a day trader – yet the day trader will pick up reps little and often

Hence a CLEAR separation.

The share tips at the moment are a MESS> if I were a new member I join, see the marvellous work of miles, then open the share tips and see a lot of junk. Surely its better to have 10 tips that are REAL and easy to jump on, which we can argue on.
BUT agree we need the quick tips

Now we have the site we HAVE TO keep it separate

Chat on trends or “Are cancer drugs in May due to?” type questions need to go in the general forums.

Hence:

Share tips / shorting 48 hours + A LOT of information, clearly labelled. Like XL tip where you shout from the hills. Criteria for a post
48 hour or less trades Fast and furious, quick posts allowed, No criteria
Chat / discussion / trend analysis Discussion boards

Obviously we are used to one forum – now we need to use them separately. Current tips that are poor will be removed or asked to be editied

WE HAVE TO SET TOP EXAMPLES to potential new members or have reputation removed. Some members will only ever use the 48 hour or less threads, I generally tip for 4 weeks + hence will be more in the other.

Makes sense. We will need someone in charge of the 48 hour or less thread to check on members and keep it plugging along eventually. I keep the share tip section tight.

Eventually we have it automated (hopefully – big big task) where you have to enter criteria for a 48 hour+ share tip – and then it gets entered on a summary board like the hall of fame, only they are live. Good ones stay on hall of fame. The share tip section is what we are all about, people can comment, maybe call us mad to show us the light, or follow us on, but basically you are arguing your case to buy to others so needs to be quality.

I agree with Vic. Take some pride in your posts guys. If you have not read the post on how to post a stock tip do it now. Learn how to attach images to posts, use colors or bold to separate headers, spell check, stay on topic, and follow good formatting guidelines. See our own procedures here for good examples on how to make a nice post.

I realize not all of this is obvious so I will do my best to work with Sean on expanding the procedures asap. Personally I think things are going swimmingly, and once everyone gets over all the new features, and the best way to do things, we should have a very powerful board.

Keep it up!

Note: Stickied this thread.

Miles can you check the above and make it the top / only post here. Just made it clearer

We do need an area for URGENT, DAY TRADES / 48 HOUR trades - which many of us post. Splitting out investment / short duration trades (for people that work!) and quick chart watching jumps (for alot of us)

As per email

You may want to make that above post look a bit sexier with bullet points etc - looks a bit of a block of writing but actually whats on it, is very basic

Cheers
