Arrow Saudi Prince Assumes Large Stake in GM (GM, TTM, WNC, TSLA, PC, JKS, MCP, CTC, C, NWS

According to The New York Times, Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal says he has invested $500 million in General Motors’s (GM) recent $20 billion initial public offering, giving the Saudi prince 1% a roughly stake in the American carmaker.

As a whole, the Trucks and Auto Stocks Index is down fractionally today, but it is currently ahead of the S&P 500 by 7.5% over the last month.

Top individual components on the day include India’s Tata Motors (TTM), up 3%, truck manufacturer Wabash National (WNC), up 4%, and electric car company Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA), up 3%. The latter company’s stock has jumped since Panasonic (PC), the biggest maker of rechargeable batteries, bought a $30-million stake in Tesla November 4, paying $21.15 a share.

Elsewhere in the 2010 IPOs Index investors have been eying include Chinese solar company JinkoSolar Holding (JKS), rare earth miner Molycorp (MCP) and real estate investment company IFM Investments (CTC).

Prince Alwaleed’s investments typically focus on banks, hotels and media firms. His investment company has sizable stakes in Citigroup (C), News Corp (NWS), Apple (AAPL) and Time Warner (TWX).

After slumping in recent years due to high oil prices and the global recession, automakers are seeing resurgence in consumer confidence with new fuel efficient vehicles and other green technologies. For example, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which tests vehicles for emissions and fuel efficiency, has said Nissan Motor (NSANY) Leaf could be getting the fuel equivalent of 99 miles a gallon following recent tests.

$TSLA has been continuously missing on production goals whereas Jaguar unveiled its first electric car Jaguar I-Pace. Will it affect $TSLA?
