E Trade has worked out pretty well for me. I love their platform and I must say they have excellent customer service. When I was brand new to the stock world they were willing to take their time and answer any of my dumbass questions with complete patience. The research is simple and easy, and has been extremely useful to me. I have had very little problems with them.

NOTE: I have only used one other broker, so I do not have much to compare it to. I registered an account with TD Ameritrade but did not put any money in. I just used it to see how it compared to E Trade.

E*Trade has worked pretty well for me.

The only issue I've had with them is not being able to cancel orders in real time when the market is closed: has happened to me that I wanted to sell shares of stock X in the after-hours market, but the system didn't let me because I had an open order to sell the same stock in the regular session. If you try to cancel the regular-session order, they will only accept the cancellation about 30 minutes before the regular market opens the next day.

I have only one issue with them:

They charge a .005 comission per share on trades over 2000 shares. That smokes my chili.

They waive the .015 fee per share on trades over 2000 shares if you make more than 30 trades per quarter (and the fixed fee goes down to 9.99 per trade).

E-trade - one of the only US brokers that UK citizens can use. I think they're a great broker, offer a good platform, slightly expensive on fees (we UK-ers pay double fees, but then again we pay no tax ).

My one problem with them is they are pretty much broke (E-Trade financial the bank that is) and were recently downgraded by Moody's to "Junk".

So, if ET Financial goes under, what happens to ET brokerage? ...
