Trading/Investing -------------- Have been following the markets for a while, started investing/trading last October. Still feel inexperienced but trying to learn every day. I have genuine interest for a broad group of sectors and global/political events. Good - have been doing alright overall (read: making a bit of ). Focusing on playing with some of the large caps (Aviva, HIG, BARC) etc... as they swing back and forth. Now feeling a bit more adventurous with the smaller caps. Am more risk averse than I'd like to be on some of my hunches but that is partly due to my financial position (student debt and uncertain future income as may be going back to school).Bad - as I said, feel quite new at this. In my first two weeks of trading, I felt there would be a run up due to Obama/election stuff. I was up 40% on Lon:AV and NYSE:HIG, big money for me... and I didn't take any of it. I am learning to take profits when necessary and to NOT fully sell out of rising stocks and all that. I have patience and don't panic which helps. Mainly following LSE, NYSE. Thought I'd be more into the technology stocks on NASDAQ as I'm into tech stuff but not for the moment. Personal ------- I am 28. Born in Poland, raised in Canada, lived in Switzerland, West Germany... now living in the UK. Been all over the place, so have the adaptable/generalist personality as a result. Know a little about everything sort of a person. Started in engineering at university, transferred 2nd year and ended up with a combined economics/media degree. I am working at one of the major banks in the UK, in the investment banking arm. It's a stagnant support role and I am looking to move directly into something in finance/invesment where I can actually use my brain. Only thing it gives me is some free time at work. I'd rather go right into a more fitting job but it looks like I will have to do a Masters postgraduate route as no one responds to my fairly unconventional CV. So, hope to provide some useful commentary and develop into a respected member here. I am actually amazed at the amount of useful knowledge that is filtered through here. Thanks to Vic for advertising the place. Last edited by PanKleks; 05-07-2009 at 05:39 AM.. |

Hi mate and welcome. GReat to have you here. Engineering - I hear you man. Studied Mech Engineering and after though - hell I hate machines. Good at maths etc but, heck. Managed to do 3 years as business analyst where I cut my teeth on the markets, had to study accouning though (CIMA the business side) came to London and headed to Lloyds of London. Are you in London? Lloyds broker or underwriter starts slow but hell you can make a fortune. Your mixed degree and locations - all helps as its people skills. All placing big nasty risks with corporations AKA insurance so far harder than stock broking. You get to place business with major corporate clients - which are generally listed on the stock exhange. HEnce meet the CFO, CEO, and you get to learn alot. Not just about insurance company investing, but a huge mix of corporations. Hence where I can get a huge first hand level of info on massive clients (non insider)
Anyway mate good to have you here. Get stuck in - but with limited funds set stop losses hard and try and end up taking out the money you stuck in. Careful picks on low downside and huge upsides is the way Cheers

Interesting write up on the insurance business. I'll take a look over at good ol efinancialcareers and the lloyds site and see if there's any posts being advertised. Gracias for the welcome, Scott as well. |

Sounds good Vic, would definitely be up for it. I've tried hard to stop the mass murdering over the past year.
