The euro EURUSD -0.08% fetched $1.3704, slightly more than $1.3698 on Friday. Investors later Monday will look for cues from German trade data and industrial production figures for October.

The British pound GBPUSD +0.07% traded at $1.6346, up from $1.6339. The Australian dollar AUDUSD -0.43% was unchanged at 91.03 U.S. cents.

Japan’s Nikkei Average JP:NIK -0.30% fell 0.3%, with the index shrugging off a weakening yen USDJPY -0.0001% , as the market pulled back from a sharp 2.3% jump Monday. The dollar gained 0.4% against its Japanese counterpart Monday and strengthened slightly Tuesday to ¥103.21, within striking distance of the 2013 high of ¥103.74.

Among the most-traded Asian currencies, the Japanese yen USDJPY -0.13% extended gains, with the dollar slipping to ¥102.62 from ¥102.80 Tuesday, when it fell back below the ¥103 handle.

The Australian dollar AUDUSD -0.23% fell to 91.36 U.S. cents from 91.51 U.S. cents, with a key measure of consumer confidence falling sharply to its lower point since July.

Most other major currency pairs moved in tight ranges Thursday, with the euro EURUSD -0.08% slightly higher at $1.3791, up from late Wednesday’s $1.3786, while the British pound GBPUSD +0.18% eased to $1.6358 from $1.6379.

The dollar strengthened 0.9% overnight against the yen USDJPY +0.5067% and continued to push higher in Asian trading. At ¥103.56, the greenback was back within striking distance of the ¥103.74 high it reached in May.

The euro EURUSD +0.20% traded at $1.3750, up from $1.3731 on Friday.

Meanwhile, the British pound GBPUSD +0.12% bought $1.6298, little changed from late Friday’s $1.6294.

The Australian dollar AUDUSD -0.10% bought 89.52 U.S. cents, down from 89.61 U.S. cents on Friday. But the Aussie bounced back from intraday lows Monday reached after HSBC’s preliminary December report on manufacturing-sector activity in China showed growth slowing to a three-month low.

The euro EURUSD +0.06% rose to $1.3764 from $1.3731 on Friday. The euro had traded as high as $1.3798 earlier Monday, according to FactSet.
Earlier, preliminary readings of December manufacturing-sector activity showed business activity in the euro zone increased in December. Results were split in the region’s two largest economies; Germany’s manufacturers grew at the fastest pace in 31 months as activity in France continued to decline.

By late morning in East Asia, gold for February delivery GCG4 -1.23% was down $14.80, or 1.2%, at $1,220.20 an ounce, while March silver SIH4 -2.64% was hit much harder, down 44 cents, or 2.2%, at $19.62 an ounce.
A day earlier, gold prices settled at $1,235 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, up $4.90, or 0.4%, before the Fed news.

The dollar’s gains Tuesday were seen against most of its major rivals, with the euro EURUSD -0.10% slipping to $1.3678 from $1.3693, the British pound GBPUSD -0.09% inching down to $1.6346 from $1.6350, and the Australian dollar AUDUSD -0.24% declining to 89.13 U.S. cents from 89.37 U.S. cents.

The Japanese yen USDJPY +0.05% also retreated modestly, with the dollar rising to ¥104.34 from ¥104.06.

The euro EURUSD +0.01% was little changed from its pre-holiday levels, buying $1.3674, compared to $1.3677 late Tuesday.
Among other majors, the British pound GBPUSD +0.13% was little changed at $1.6373, while the Australian dollar AUDUSD -0.44% fell to 88.86 U.S. cents from 89.26 U.S. cents.
